Squadron (Umpty Squadron) in April 1917.\u00a0 He was credited with 5 &#8216;kills&#8217; during the time he was in France. <span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">It was after he joined the 111th Squadron that Captain Bott crashed in the desert on April 22nd. and became imprisoned by the Turks.\u00a0He later\u00a0 wrote about his escape to Constantinople in\u00a0<a title=\"Eastern Flights\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/Blackwood.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Eastern Flights<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>which had earlier been serialised in several publications notably Harper&#8217;s Monthly Magazine\u00a0where it appeared in\u00a05 parts from September 1919. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a title=\"The Bott Incident\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/arts\/yourpaintings\/paintings\/the-bott-incident-6546\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;crash&#8217;<\/span><\/a><\/span> was featured in a painting by Stuart Read which is currently in storage at the Imperial War Museum in London.
