{"id":12836,"date":"2022-11-14T06:55:24","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T06:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/?p=12836"},"modified":"2022-11-15T21:06:31","modified_gmt":"2022-11-15T21:06:31","slug":"ken-brown-and-pan-horror-covers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/2022\/11\/14\/ken-brown-and-pan-horror-covers\/","title":{"rendered":"Ken Brown and PAN Horror Covers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just one item this week but it&#8217;s a good one as we can now add another name to the roll of honour for designed four of the covers for the PAN Horror Books series.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/horror.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/horror.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/horror.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/horror-300x97.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Having recently been in communication with artist <a href=\"https:\/\/colemandesign.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sean Coleman<\/span><\/strong><\/a> he mentioned a friend of his, a fellow artist named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoganbrown.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hogan Brown.<\/span><\/strong><\/a> Hogan&#8217;s father, Ken Brown, was responsible for designing some of the covers in the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/Horror\/HorrorStories.htm\">PAN Horror Series<\/a><\/span><\/strong> back in the 1960s. Unfortunately, Ken is no longer with us but I would like to say a big &#8220;Thank You&#8221; to Ken&#8217;s wife Ruth who sent me the following recollections.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ken.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ken-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ken-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ken.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><br><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Recollections of Ruth Brown<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>As far as I can remember\u2026\u2026.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>We had moved to our first \u201cbought\u201d house in Teddington 1967. It was a small modern house with a single open plan ground floor. (Relevant!)<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>My husband, Ken Brown, had joined the BBC as a graphic designer in 1964 when the in-house graphics department was formed, dealing with opening titles and promotional content for future programmes.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>10 designers were recruited from various different disciplines &#8211; Ken came from the advertising agency J Walter Thompson, having trained as an illustrator at Birmingham College of Art.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>As well as working 9 to 5 at the BBC, he also occasionally took on freelance work. He didn\u2019t have an agent &#8211; it was usually through recommendation or word of mouth.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>One such commission was to design the covers for the series of Pan Book of Horror Stories. Because of the day job, he did the designing and photographing of the covers at home, in the evening. I specifically specify the evening and not the weekend because by now we had a young son and the very nature of the content of the covers was obviously not particularly child friendly, so we had to make sure he was asleep! I know he borrowed a cobweb device from there.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>I don\u2019t know where he got the rubber head from (he cut it open and added the worms) but it lived in the top of the wardrobe for several years after the \u201cshoot\u201d. And the wedding cake (made out of cardboard and plaster) was consigned to the garage.<\/strong><\/em><br><em><strong>It was all VERY low tech but great fun to do and enormously successful \u2013 hence the interest to this day.<\/strong><\/em><br><em><strong>I hope this adds some insight and is of interest.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>PS.
