I knew I had read somewhere that this involved Edward Preston Young (11\/17\/1913 &#8211; 01\/28\/2003) and it eventually came to me. How could I have forgotten as it was mentioned in that excellent publication <a href=\"https:\/\/telos.co.uk\/shop\/other-non-fiction\/art\/cover-me-the-vintage-art-of-pan-books-1950-1965-p-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;Cover Me&#8217;<\/span> <\/strong><\/em><\/a>by Colin Larkin. Young worked for Penguin and was responsible for the Penguin logo and it was also Young, when he later worked for PAN, who was responsible for the simplified PAN logo so familiar from 1947 onwards, not as so often credited to&nbsp; Mervyn Peake, Peake&#8217;s logos were only used on the first three unnumbered paperbacks. Edward Young&#8217;s book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/Advertising\/penguin1000.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>&#8216;One of Our Submarines&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> was Penguins 1,000th title in 1954 and PAN published his book <em><strong>&#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202010\/PANX339.htm\">The Fifth Passenger&#8217;<\/a><\/span> <\/strong><\/em>in 1964.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Leslie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-13295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Leslie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"163\"><\/a>Doris Leslie, n\u00e9e Oppenheim and later Lady Fergusson Hannay (09\/03\/1891 \u2013 30\/05\/1982) had six titles published by PAN between 1951 and 1968. I&#8217;ve rescanned all her covers&nbsp; and included the original artwork and a couple of roughs for <\/span><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;<a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN166.htm\">Full Flavour&#8217;<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The other titles are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202008\/PANX173.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;The Perfect Wife<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8216;<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202010%20M\/PANM87.htm\"> <em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;I Return&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a>, <em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;<a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202010%20M\/PANM147.htm\">This For Caroline<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202010%20T\/PANT33.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;Paragon Street&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> and &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/tikit.net\/Later%20PANs\/Sceptre.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Sceptre and the Rose&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Going through my DVD of original PAN artworks thanks to Colin Larkin I&#8217;m listing four titles that had alternative covers that were not used including a couple I&#8217;ve featured before. Looking at the artwork for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202010%20T\/PANT25.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;The Death of William Posters&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> painted by Pat Owen I notice it is numbered M204 while it was actually T25 when published. M204 was used for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202010%20M\/PANM204.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong> &#8216;Sabre-Tooth&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> The others are &#8216;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN422.htm\">The Spoletta Story<\/a>;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PANX3.htm\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;Sorrell and Son&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/2019\/HHGTTG.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8216;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been having an email conversation with Peter Miller regarding a link between the logos for Penguin and PAN.
