{"id":18124,"date":"2026-03-02T06:52:30","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T06:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/?p=18124"},"modified":"2026-03-02T06:52:32","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T06:52:32","slug":"glendon-swarthout-trouble-in-july-and-gaetano-gay-talese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/2026\/03\/02\/glendon-swarthout-trouble-in-july-and-gaetano-gay-talese\/","title":{"rendered":"Glendon Swarthout, &#8216;Trouble in July&#8217; and Gaetano\u00a0&#8216;Gay&#8217;\u00a0Talese"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Glendon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-18140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Glendon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"101\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a>This weeks random author is Glendon Swarthout (08\/04\/1918 to 23\/08\/1992) who was an American writer and novelist. <sup id=\"cite_ref-NYT_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Several of his novels were made into films including<\/span> <em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN%202006\/G%20Series\/PANG620.htm\">&#8216;Where the Boys Are&#8217;<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PANG405.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;<em><strong>They Came to Cordura&#8217; <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;<strong><i><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" title=\"The Shootist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/2026\/March\/Swarthout.htm\">The Shootist&#8217;<\/a><\/i>,<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> which was John Wayne&#8217;s last work. These were all published by PAN plus another three. I couldn&#8217;t find if I had a second printing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/2026\/March\/Swarthout.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;They Came to Cordura&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> so I bought a cheap bundle with this included. I then found the copy misplaced on the shelf so was a bit miffed until they arrived when I found they were all titles in unread condition. I replaced all but one of the copies I already had with them. I&#8217;m looking for a copy of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/2026\/March\/Swarthout.htm\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;Skeletons&#8217;<\/span> <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as the only one I&#8217;ve found so far is in India. Glendon was inducted into the Western Writers Hall of Fame which is in the library of the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. Just as an aside I have been to this museum a few years ago when we stayed in one of Buffalo Bill&#8217;s cabins. I made a page of the 1964 Caldwell titles that are down as re-do in Helweg&#8217;s ledger for which he got paid \u00a350 16s for each but I&#8217;ve just found I missed one, namely <a href=\"https:\/\/tikit.net\/PANG479.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;Georgia Boy&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> so the omission is now rectified. This week pick is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/2026\/March\/Wife.htm\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;Thy Neighbour&#8217;s Wife&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Gaetano &#8216;Gay&#8217; Talese (07\/02\/1932) He is an American writer who worked as a journalist for The New York Times and Esquire magazine during the 1960s. and wrote 14 novels of which <em><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8216;Thy Neighbour&#8217;s Wife&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/em> with cover artwork by Peter Collins is the only one published by PAN. Peter Collins ARCAS (1923 to 2001)\u00a0 studied at the Royal College of Art, winning a scholarship. Leaving in 1950 he then worked as a commercial artist producing some well-known posters for clients including British Railways and British European Airways.
