{"id":3534,"date":"2016-01-04T07:39:25","date_gmt":"2016-01-04T07:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/?p=3534"},"modified":"2016-01-04T07:42:34","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T07:42:34","slug":"jack-higgins-etc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/2016\/01\/04\/jack-higgins-etc\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Higgins etc."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here&#8217;s hoping for a great 2016 and that\u00a0we can all\u00a0fully experience the\u00a0feeling of a new word I&#8217;ve just learnt after watching &#8216;University Challenge&#8217; The word is VELLICHOR and means &#8220;the strange wistfulness of used bookstores, which are somehow infused with the passage of time&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Jack.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3535\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Jack.jpg\" alt=\"Jack\" width=\"204\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the last few months of 2015 I&#8217;ve been trying to track down as many Jack Higgins covers that were published by PAN in the 70&#8217;s and 80&#8217;s. So far I&#8217;ve got <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/Blog\/Higgins\/Higgins.htm\">25 different titles with 42 different covers <\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">showing variants. I&#8217;m left wondering why there are 3 different versions of &#8216;SOLO&#8217; all dated 1981? I&#8217;ve included 3 that are scans of the very small covers shown on the inside of the double editions.\u00a0I have all the others shown but no luck <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Exocet1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3546\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3546 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Exocet1-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"Exocet1\" width=\"224\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Exocet1-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Exocet1.jpg 454w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>with these.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Right &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0an PAN\/Rupa Indian edition from 1983.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a few weeks I&#8217;m hoping to include some material from Keith Scaife who painted 6 of the Jack Higgins covers including &#8216;The Iron Tiger&#8217; which shows a 1970&#8217;s Bedford when it should be a WW11 one! I&#8217;m also trying to find out if Higgins won a\u00a0Golden PAN Award for selling over a million copies of any one title. &#8216;The Eagle Has Landed&#8217; has sold over fifty million copies worldwide but how many were actually\u00a0sold by PAN? I have contacted Alysoun Sanders, archivist at PAN\/MacMillan and hope she can provide some answers when she is back in her office after the festive break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Talking of Golden PAN awards I see there is a bit of controversy over <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PAN307.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Diary of a Young Girl<\/span>&#8216; <\/a>and copyright issues. The 70 years should have expired on the 1st January this year but the Ann Frank Fund claim it was jointly written by Ann and her father Otto\u00a0 and so the 70 years is extended until 70 years after his death.
