{"id":3698,"date":"2016-02-01T08:05:59","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T08:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/?p=3698"},"modified":"2016-02-01T08:11:17","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T08:11:17","slug":"picador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/2016\/02\/01\/picador\/","title":{"rendered":"Picador"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Up to now I&#8217;ve not really mention much about PAN&#8217;s imprint Picador which\u00a0 came into being in 1971,\u00a0the same time as Piccolo.\u00a0Ralph Vernon-Hunt, Clarence Paget, Simon Master and Caroline Lassalle (the firm\u2019s chief in-house reader) tried to find a name and eventually Caroline\u00a0came up with the name Picador (Paget wanted Primrose!) and she became its first editor of what was intended to be a showcase for international writers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the 6 October 1972 Picador launched with eight paperbacks: &#8216;Rosshalde&#8217; by Hermann Hesse, &#8216;A Personal Anthology&#8217; by Jorge Luis Borges, &#8216;Trout Fishing in America&#8217; by Richard Brautigan, &#8216;The Naked I&#8217; edited by Frederick R. Karl and Leo Hamalian, &#8216;The Bodyguard&#8217; by Adrian Mitchell, &#8216;Heroes and Villains&#8217; by Angela Carter, &#8216;Les Gu\u00e9rill\u00e8res&#8217; by Monique Wittig, and &#8216;The Lorry&#8217; by Peter Wahloo.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/Picador\/Picador.htm\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3708\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3708 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Titles-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"Titles\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Titles-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Titles.jpg 608w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sonny Mehta became Editorial Director for Pan and Picador in 1974. At least\u00a0three Picador titles have won the award namely &#8216;Unreliable Memoirs&#8217; by Clive James, &#8216;One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest&#8217; by Ken Kersey and &#8216;The Lovely Bones&#8217; by Alice Sebold. The latter was republished along with 11 other titles in 2012 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Picador.
