{"id":4876,"date":"2017-01-09T06:51:37","date_gmt":"2017-01-09T06:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/?p=4876"},"modified":"2017-02-04T09:52:18","modified_gmt":"2017-02-04T09:52:18","slug":"thomas-forman-printers-plus-a-couple-of-snippets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/2017\/01\/09\/thomas-forman-printers-plus-a-couple-of-snippets\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomas Forman, printers plus a couple of snippets."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now I don&#8217;t know if I ever gave it much thought but I think I naively believed the covers for PAN books and the text blocks were done at the same printers but I now know that not to be the case.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4877 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Forman2-300x289.jpg\" alt=\"forman2\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" \/>So far I&#8217;ve only found one printers, namely Thomas Forman and Sons Ltd, who were a huge and long established printing concern in Nottingham until they went out of business in 2000. It was while looking at some images in the Thomas Forman archives I first spotted a familiar cover <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/PANG248.htm\">&#8216;The Striptease Murders&#8217;<\/a><\/span>. I contacted the preservation society\u00a0who kindly sent me the following email<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Dear Tim.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Formans printed a number of book covers for Pan Books. <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">We also hold printed samples of the following titles: <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Man Meets Dog \u2013 Konrad Z. Lorenz <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Way Back \u2013 Vincent Brome <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Bony Buys A Woman \u2013 Arthur Upfield<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Howard F. Parker (Secretary) <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Thos. Forman Preservation Society<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve put together a page <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tikit.net\/Blog\/Forman.htm\">HERE<\/a><\/span> which gives a little of the history plus links to the newly scanned covers of the four mentioned titles. I&#8217;m taking the opportunity,when revisiting back pages, to put on larger scans. This is something I would like to do for all but it just takes time &#8211; and is mind blowingly boring!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve also added a newspaper clipping from &#8216;The Valley Morning Star&#8217; from 31st July 1976 which has a report of Ralph Vernon-Hunt presenting James Herriot with four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/golden-pan-awards\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Golden Pan Awards<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lastly but by no means least I&#8217;ve managed to get a first edition copy of Alan Bott&#8217;s\u00a0 book &#8216;An Airman&#8217;s Outings&#8217; This still has the very rare\u00a0dustjacket and was published by William Blackwood and Son in Edinburgh in 1917.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/AirmansOutings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/AirmansOutings-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"airmansoutings\" width=\"500\" height=\"731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/AirmansOutings-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/AirmansOutings-768x1123.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/AirmansOutings-700x1024.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tikit.net\/panfans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/AirmansOutings.jpg 954w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now I don&#8217;t know if I ever gave it much thought but I think I naively believed the covers for PAN books and the text blocks were done at the same printers but I now know that not to be the case.
